Forsyth County commissioners want to leave millage rates alone

Forsyth County commissioners Wednesday proposed fiscal year 2017 millage rates that would remain unchanged but reflect a tax increase for some property owners.

A news release from the county states that because of growth in the tax digest, leaving millage rates as is will generate property tax revenue of 1.89 percent more than a rollback, or revenue-neutral, rate would.

The digest grew 5.55 percent in 2015.  3.61 percent of that came from new construction, the remainder from increased reassessment values, according to the county.

The current rate for maintenance and operations is at 4.642 mills. The fire rate is 1.975 mills, and the bond rate is at 1.419 mills.

"These rates will fund the county’s 2017 general operating budget, which is currently in the preliminary stages of development. Forsyth County continues to have millage rates among the lowest in metro Atlanta," the media release stated.

Three public hearings are scheduled on the rate next month.  Commissioners are scheduled to adopt a millage rate at 7:00 p.m. July 21, following the final hearing.
