Hall, Gibson split Greenville-Pickens Late Model features

By Tom Baker

EASLEY, S.C. - In a night of unexpected developments at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Dylan Hall and Trey Gibson split the Twin 60 lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model features at the Easley, S.C. raceway.

Chase Purdy came into the first of the two Late Model features with seven wins at Greenville on the season, and he was second in NASCAR national points, just one point behind the leader.

Purdy started on the pole and lead the first 34 laps until a yellow flag for oil on the track slowed the action. Track officials quickly cleaned up the spill and green flag action resumed with Purdy, Hall, Cody Haskins, Will Burns and Luke Sorrow in the top five.

Hall had kept Purdy in his sights and on lap 43 he dove to the inside out of turn four to take the lead. One lap later, the second yellow of the night flew for the slow car of Luke Sorrow. Two more quick yellows for separate spins involving Haskins and Randy Porter took place before another lap was complete.

Under the second yellow, Purdy drove to the pits and out of the action with mechanical issues.

Hall led the final 14 laps unchallenged to pick up his first win of the season. Burns finished in second, with Ryan Walker in third, Tasha Kummer in fourth and J.P. Dyar in fifth.

Hall outraced Purdy for the lead at the start of the second Late Model feature, but it was short lived, as Burns took the top spot on lap 9 and began to pull away. Hall began to fall back and two laps later he stopped on the backstretech with an engine issue, drawing the first caution of the race.

Back under green, Trey Gibson took control from Burns and drove away to score his fourth win of the season. Burns finished in second, with Haskins in third, Hall in fourth and Kummer in fifth.

The Pure Stock feature went wire-to-wire without a caution. Charlie Meinders started first and led every lap en-route to his second win of the season. Buck Simmons finished in second, with Spencer Morgan in third, Zack Meinders in fourth and Hank Hutto in fifth.

Chad Redding started on the pole in the Four Cylinder feature and stayed there en route to the victory. Manual Molleda, Jack Hooper, Ray Mullinax and Tommy Davis rounded out the top five.

Robin Darnell led all 20 laps of the Super Stock feature to take the victory. Tim Sams finished in second, followed by Ted Somero in third, Travis Cox in fourth and Andy Norris in fifth.

Bobby Emory started third in the 20-lap Renegade feature, but he quickly worked his way by Spenser Darnell and early leader Alexx Breazele and went on to score the win in a race that also saw no yellow flags. Breazele came home in second, followed by Darnell in third, Parker Jameson in fourth and Shane Hill in fifth.

Greenville-Pickens Speedway returns to action on Saturday, June 18, with the Limited Late Models, Four Cylinders, Renegades, Pure Stocks and Super Stocks in competition around the historic half-mile raceway.
