Riverside Military Academy hosting Boys State program later this month

By AccessWDUN staff

Riverside Military Academy will host the 2016 Department of Georgia Boys State program June 12-18.  The 2014 summer session was the organization’s inaugural year on the RMA campus.

Boys State is a week-long leadership action course in state and local government for rising male seniors who qualify for this selective program.

RMA rising seniors Benjamin Borden, Derek Ferguson, and Thomas Mims have been selected to participate this year. Cadets who were selected to 2016 Boys State programs in other states include Wiley Burns (Alabama), Carlos Carrillo (North Carolina), Tanner Koch (Florida), and Ivan Pearson (Minnesota).

Riverside faculty members who are Boys State alumni include English Department Chair Andrew Jobson, who attended Louisiana Boys State, and science teacher Colonel Robert Cagle, who attended Georgia Boys State.

Georgia Boys State participants are instructed on Georgia political history, the law and court system, and parliamentary procedure.  Delegates learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state in which each level of government is managed by peer-elected representatives.  The Georgia Boys State session also includes a visitation day with representatives from a variety of colleges and universities.

The Boys State program was founded by the American Legion in 1935.   Visit www.dogboysstate.org to learn more about the Georgia Boys State program.
