By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

First-time unemployment insurance claims were down in Gainesville and most of Georgia last month.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says claims statewide decreased 5.9 percent in April, compared to March.

All but four of Georgia's metropolitan areas reported a decline in the number of applications. Those showing an increase were Albany, Augusta, Columbus and Hinesville.
The decreases were led by Dalton (47.5 percent).

The number was down in Gainesville by 16.7 percent, in Athens by 18.6 percent and in Atlanta by 3.5 percent.
