Habitat for Humanity Hall County celebrated Women Build week Monday by working on home number 54 in their new Copper Glenn subdivision.

Ann Nixon, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Hall County, said groups from Lowe's and Liberty Mutual were the primary workers on site.

"We're working on putting siding on a house, putting in windows and other general building tasks," she said.

Nixon said Women Build week will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year.

"It started in 1991 in Charlotte where a group of women came together and built a Habitat for Humanity house. And it was from that experience that the idea was born, 'Why could we not be accessing women and helping them learn how to do what is traditionally a male-dominated type of activity?'" she explained. "Women Build has been an extremely successful program with Habitat since then."

While noting that the construction industry is typically a male-dominated field, Nixon said Women Build week seeks to empower women to utilize their abilities in the field as well.

"Women can build just as easily as men can, but they don't realize it, they don't have the experince doing it, they don't have the support to learn how to do it in general, and what we offer through the Women Build program is the opportunity for women to come out on site with us without any experinence of any kind," Nixon continued. "We provide the materials, the equipment, the direction and the support for them to learn how to do these things, and it's an eye-opener for women; they realize, 'This is not rocket science. I can do this.'"

Award-winning singer Katie Deal was on hand as a celebrity special guest contributing to the construction efforts.
