MOBILE, Ala. — Brenau University’s Outdoor Track & Field team picked up its fourth consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in Mobile, Alabama.
The Golden Tigers collected 11 first-place finishes at the SSAC meet and won the conference crown by a 138-point margin.
“To win four successive conference championships elevates our program to another level and speaks volumes about the quality and character of this team,” said Brenau athletics director Michael Lochstampfor.
Deishane’ Honeycutt, a senior from Stone Mountain, picked up two individual titles at the meet, including first place finishes in the 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles. Honeycutt’s final time of 56.95 in the 400 meters is a new conference record, while her 1:05:29 finish time in the 400 meter hurdles earned the biology major her fourth straight conference title in that event.
Aubrey Fearnow, a senior from Arnoldsville, also recorded two first place finishes. In addition to winning the shot put and hammer events, she placed second in the javelin competition and third place in discus. Her combined point total of 34 points led all Golden Tigers at the meet.
Jasmine Ray, a senior from Bowling Green, Ky., came in first in the 800 meters with a final time of 2:22:68. She also finished first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, with a final time of 12:24:70. Ray also placed second in the 1,500 meters with a final time of 5:02:44.
In team races, Brenau finished first in the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relays.
“Honeycutt ran the fastest leg on winning the 4x800, running almost fast enough to qualify for nationals in the open 800,” said Brenau Track & Field Head Coach Byron Kramer. “To top off this magnificent performance, she anchored the 4x400 win, leading the team to an A -standard national qualifying time of 3:53:98. She got the baton about 35 meters behind and won by five meters.”
Rounding out Brenau’s other first place finishers were Olamide Sokunbi, a senior from Marietta, who won the triple jump; Ayana Daniels, a freshman from Snellville, who won the pole vault; and Dana Cole, a senior from West Palm Beach, Fla., who won the discus.
Cheyenne Wells, a junior from Sandy Springs, also performed well in multiple events, finishing second in the 100 meters and finishing fourth in both the 100 and 200 meter hurdles.
“I'm thrilled that Coach Kramer has been successful in continuing the tradition of making sure that our team is dominant in nearly every track and every field event, giving us the opportunity to maximize our potential to achieve such a huge number of points," Lochstampfor said
