Moore’s 10th-Inning blast propels G-Braves Past Norfolk

By AccessWDUN Staff

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA — Gwinnett first baseman Tyler Moore drilled a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the G-Braves to a 4-2 win over the Norfolk Tides on Friday night in game two of the four-game series at Harbor Park.

Moore’s shot to left-center field off Tides’ reliever Zach Phillips (L, 0-1) came with Reid Brignac on first base. The first homer by a G-Brave in 2016 snapped a 2-2 deadlock that had lasted since the second inning.

Gwinnett (2-0) rolled out to a 2-0 lead against Norfolk left-hander Nick Additon in the top of the second. Matt Tuiasosopo led off with a double to left and scored on Ryan Lavarnway’s double to left. Brandon Snyder moved Lavarnway to third with a single to left, and Rio Ruiz followed with his first Triple-A hit, an RBI single to left scoring Lavarnway.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Norfolk scored twice against Gwinnett starter Mike Foltynewicz in the bottom of the second. Foltynewicz gave up a leadoff single to Dariel Alvarez and walked Henry Urrutia to open the inning. Francisco Pena then singled to right, but an on-target throw to the plate by G-Braves’ right fielder Chase d’Arnaud cut Alvarez down trying to score from third. After a walk to Ozzie Martinez loaded the bases, Michael Almanzar grounded to third, scoring Urrutia. Gwinnett shortstop Daniel Castro then misplayed a ball hit by Paul Janish, allowing Pena to score the tying run.

After six and a half scoreless innings, Norfolk (0-2) had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With right-hander Danny Burawa on the mound for the G-Braves, the Tides loaded the bases with one out. Burawa recovered, striking out Christian Walker and inducing Joey Terdoslavich into a groundout to send the game to extras.

Burawa (W, 1-0) got the win by going 1.0 inning with one hit, two walks and one strikeout. Madison Younginer (S, 1) picked up the save by working a scoreless bottom of the 10th with one hit. Foltynewicz, making his first start since rib surgery in September, went 4.0 innings with two hits, two runs (one earned), five walks and one strikeout. He was relieved in the fifth by Ryan Weber, who pitched 3.1 innings with three hits and one strikeout.  Left-hander Ian Krol retired two batters in the eighth.

For Norfolk, Additon went 4.0 innings with five hits, two earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Richard Rodriguez pitched 2.0 innings with three strikeouts. Cesar Cabral worked 1.0 inning with one strikeout. Pedro Beato went 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout. Oliver Drake pitched 1.0 inning with one walk and two strikeouts. Phillips got the loss by going 1.0 inning with one hit, two earned runs, three walks and one strikeout.

At the plate, Moore led the G-Braves with a 2-for-5 night that included the homer and two RBIs. Lavarnway was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Ruiz was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

For the Tides, L.J. Hoes and Martinez were each 1-for-3.

The G-Braves and Tides continue the four-game series on Saturday night at Harbor Park. Right-hander Aaron Blair (0-0, 0.00) will start for Gwinnett, while Norfolk will counter with former G-Braves’ right-hander Todd Redmond (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:35 p.m.
