A female employee of Georgia Gwinnett College suffered serious injuries in an explosion on campus Monday morning.
Gwinnett County Fire Department officials said in an email statement their units were summoned Building A on the Lawrenceville campus by a fire alarm sounded at 7:41 a.m. Initially, firefighters found nothing suspicious , but as they prepared to return to service, some type of explosion occurred in a women's restroom.
The firefighters found the injured woman, who works for the food service contractor on campus, with burns and blast injuries. While her injuries are serious, she is expected to survive. The injured woman's name has not been released.
Building A remains closed for the day while law enforcement, fire officials and college officials work to determine the source of the blast.
Building A houses classrooms, laboratories and some food service areas, according to the Georgia Gwinnett College website.
