Banks County man perishes in house fire

ALTO -- The cause of a house fire that claimed the life of a Banks County man Sunday night remains under investigation.

The fire, on West Coker Road off Grant Mill Drive near Alto, was reported at 7:44 p.m.

"It appears that the fire did start in the living room around a wood heater," said Banks County Fire Chief Robert Wilkins. "There is one deceased person who is located in an adjacent bedroom to the living room."

Although the investigation is continuing, "nothing indicates foul play," Wilkins said. "Everything at this point looks accidental. It's being treated as an accidental fire, however with any death there are other steps we have to take just to make sure."

The victim's name has not been released.

Firefighters from Banks County, Lee Arrendale State Prison and Baldwin responded, with several units remaining on scene until 12:19 a.m. Monday.
