With eyes on national convention, Georgia Republicans to hold local conventions soon

As local Republican parties elect delegates and alternates to the Georgia Republican Convention in the next couple of days, it's anyone's guess what will happen at the national convention in July.

UGA Political Scientist Charles Bullock said things could get interesting if a candidate doesn't reach the magic number of delegates before the convention.

Bullock brought up the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

"The person who they picked, Hubert Humphrey, didn't compete in any of the primaries," Bullock said.

While opposition from some Republican leaders against Donald Trump as the party nominee continued, Bullock said it's possible someone other than a current candidate could get the nod.

"You'd think that if it (GOP National Convention) does go beyond a first ballot it (the nominee) would be one still in the hunt now, but maybe not, doesn't necessarily have to."

Georgia is expected to have 76 delegates at the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Ahead of the state GOP convention, local Republican parties are holding conventions on Friday and Saturday.  The Hall County Republican Convention is Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Registration opens at 9:00 a.m.

The convention, which is open to the public, is being held at the party's headquarters at 715 Queen City Parkway, Gainesville.
