The pace of qualifying for the May 24 General Primary election slowed a bit on Tuesday, but picked up by the end of the business day for the county races.
Georgia's senior U.S. Senator picked up a second Democratic challenger early in the day. Cheryl Copeland, a project manager from Hiram, will run against James Knox for the Democratic nomination for the post. Republican Derrick Grayson will challenge incumbent Johnny Isakson in the general primary.
Also Tuesday, Butch Miller of Gainesville qualified to run for re-election to the District 49 State Senate seat. Miller, a Republican, is unchallenged so far.
Bonnie Chessher Oliver also qualified Tuesday to run for re-election as a Superior Court Judge in the Northeastern circuit. Judgeships are non-partisan posts.
Richard Higgins was challenged Tuesday by Steve Gailey for the Chairman of Commissioners seat. Also on the county commission, Incumbent Billy Powell will go head to head with Eugene Moon for the District 2 seat, a battle that was previously fought the last election for the seat.
Several other incumbents qualified for re-election to their current seats, including Craig Herrington for the school board Post 3, Nath Morris for the school board Post 4 and Marion Merck as county coroner.
Qualifying for the May 24 election continues through noon on Friday.
