COCHRAN, Ga. - The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series opened up the 2016 season Saturday and Sunday, as a pair of Georgia drivers took the victories Cochran Motor Speedway in Cochran, Ga.
On Saturday, Appleton, Georgia’s Brandon Overton started on the outside pole, passed pole sitter Casey Roberts on the eighth lap and then survived eight more cautions to score his first career series win.
Overton held off challenges from former series champion Dale McDowell, who finished in second. Roberts, who started on the pole, finished third, with Jordy Nipper in fourth and Riley Hickman fifth.
Bo Shirley, Cody King, Ashton Winger, Brian Ligon and Ahnna Parkhurst rounded out the top ten.
In Sunday action Casey Roberts of Tocca, Georiga took the to the lead at the drop of the green flag over outside front row starter Riley Hickman, and then proceeded to lead the 50 lap event from start to finish to get his sixth career series win.
Roberts had to work his way through lapped traffic, and this allowed McDowell to make a challenge, but he could never get around Roberts. On lap 47, McDowell blew a tire and went out of the race, moving Hickman into second place. Overton finished in third, with Nipper in fourth and Hunter Peacock in fifth.
Dillon Tidmore, Brad Skinner, Todd Morrow, Joe Armistead and Jay Elliott rounded out the top ten.
The Southern All Star Series returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6 for March Madness XIV at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC.
