Swimming: Porter, area hopefuls impress during championship preliminary races

ATLANTA — Camille Porter -- and a host of other northeast Georgia-based swimmers -- served notice on Friday: They have medals in their sites.

Porter, from Jefferson High, turned in the fastest 100 yard freestyle time of Friday's preliminary races to notch the No. 1 seed for Saturday's Class A-AAAAA title finals at the GHSA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

Porter touched the wall in 51.95 seconds -- almost a full second ahead of Lindsay Wallace in second from the Davidson Fine Arts School. The Lady Dragons standouts also finished with the fifth best 50 freestyle preliminary time and also helped the Jefferson girls 200 free relay team to the No. 5 seed.

That was only part of a big start to the weekend, however, as North Hall's Rosemary Schofield also impressed, taking fourth in 100 free and seventh in the 50 free, while teammate Ashley Johnston was sixth in 100 free. The duo also helped the North Hall girls to take the seventh seed in 200 free relay.

Chestatee also produced two swimmers that reached two championship races. Luke Hene grabbed the fourth seed in the 100 backstroke and the fifth seed for the 200 individual medley. For the Lady War Eagles Lindsey Grater notched the No. 5 seed in the 500 freestyle and the 10th seed in the 200 freestyle.

Gainesville boys also got in on Saturday's title run, claiming 10th in the 200 yard medley relay, while Red Elephants standout Brian Monaghan earned the eighth seed in the 100 breaststroke.

Lakeview Academy's Michael Wacho will also battle it out in two championship races after finishing 10th in 200 freestyle preliminary, and tying for ninth in the 100 freestyle.

Riverside Military also made it into Saturday, taking fourth in the 200 free relay, while the Eagles' Kevin Reale finished ninth in the 100 butterfly.

Tomorrow's Class A-AAAAA championship races will begin at approximately 1 p.m. in Atlanta.
