Jackson County commissioner Dwain Smith dies at age 74

The Nicholson man who represented District 4 on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners has died.

An obituary announcement from Little-Ward Funeral Home in Commerce said Dwain Waymon Smith died Wednesday, December 21 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Smith was 74.

Biographical information on the Jackson County Government website said Smith was appointed Director of Civil Defense for Jackson County in September 1976.  He became Director of Ambulance Services in November 1987.  In 1993, the Emergency Medical Services and E-911 Emergency Services were consolidated and Smith oversaw these services until his retirement in 2004.  

Graveside services for Smith will be held Friday, December 23 at 3 p.m. at Howington Cemetery in Nicholson.
