Lake Lanier Association continues with shoreline protection program

Over 3,100 lineal feet of shoreline protection will be installed later this month along the shores of Lake Lanier in Hall and Gwinnett counties.

Joanna Cloud, Executive Director of the Lake Lanier Association, made the announcement Thursday.

The Corps of Engineers has issued permits to the LLA for the completion of four island shore rip rap projects. Those projects are 500 lineal feet at marker six, mile 4; 650 feet on an island at marker 18, north of the Aqualand gas docks; 990 feet on an island near Van Pugh Park; and 990 feet on Browns Bridge Island from the northern part of Port Royale. The project totals 3,150 lineal feet of rip rap and approximately 6,500 ton of stone.

The LLA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers raised $275,000, with the help of SPLOST monies approved by Hall County voters in 2015, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources and the Chantal and Tommy Bagwell Family Foundation.

The money was used to purchase rip rap, a material that will reduce the amount of island shoreline erosion in the lake south of Browns Bridge. The Lake Lanier Association says shoreline erosion leads to increased siltation, which in turn reduces water storage capacity and impacts water quality.

Marine Specialties, Inc. will serve as the prime contractor. The project should be completed by March 2017.
