Helen police release more details about hit and run on pedestrians

HELEN — Helen Police Chief Brian Stephens is releasing more details about the hit-and-run incident in that city that left two pedestrians injured early Saturday.

Nicholas Allen Ivester, 34, of Cleveland is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, and hit and run after his Ford F-250 drove from the northbound lane of Ga. 75 (South Main Street) onto the crowded sidewalk near Super 8 Motel and Huddle House, striking two women at 12:03 a.m. Saturday, Stephens said.

Stephens on Monday identified the victims as Elsa M. Rodriguez Olsen, 64, of Illinois and Leticia Rodriguez Salazar, 60, of Marietta. Both were injured and taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. No update on their conditions has been released.

The case remains under investigation but the cause at this time appears to be impairment, Stephens said Monday.
