Sports car racer arrested in Banks County

HOMER — An accomplished sports car racer was arrested after using the restroom in the parking lot of a Banks Crossing business early Tuesday.

"This morning around 2 a.m. we received a report of a male subject in the parking lot of the RaceTrac urinating near the gas pumps," said Banks County Sheriff's Lt. Carissa McFaddin. "A deputy responded to that area and located the male subject who was described and identified him as Lucas Luhr."

The group with Luhr pointed out he is a racecar driver and said they left an awards banquet at Chateau Elan and thought they were in Buford, McFaddin said.

"While he was speaking with the deputy it was noted that Luhr was unable to keep his balance and that an overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage emitted from his person," McFaddin said.

McFaddin said Luhr admitted to the deputy he had been drinking and had consumed five or six beers and had urinated in the parking lot of the store, even showing the deputy where the incident occurred.

"Luhr was arrested and transported to our Law Enforcement Center, where he was charged with public indecency," McFaddin said. "He was released at around 10:45 a.m. [Tuesday] on a $600 bond."

Luhr is recognized as one of the most accomplished drivers in sports car racing, and is a former 24 hours of Le Mans GT winner in 2002 and 2003.

Additionally, he is a seven-time American Le Mans Series champion with 50 class wins, and also scored sports car wins at Road Atlanta, Daytona and Sebring.
