GSP releases details of fatal Lula wreck

LULA — A Rabun County woman died in a Tuesday-afternoon wreck on Ga. 365 northbound at Athens Street in Lula.

MaryEllen Maznicki, 64, of Lakemont died when she was ejected as her 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee overturned during the two-vehicle wreck, said Sgt. Anthony Coleman of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

The wreck happened when a 1994 Buick Park Avenue driven by Jerry McKee, 17, of Gainesville was attempting to enter Ga. 365 from Athens Street, Coleman said.

McKee's Buick failed to yield and struck Maznicki's Jeep, which then overturned into the median, Coleman said. Maznicki was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither McKee nor his passenger, 17-year-old Austin Smith of Gainesville, was injured.

The investigation is continuing, pending the independent investigation being conducted by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Construction Reconstruction Team, Coleman said.

The wreck closed the northbound lanes of Ga. 365, as well as Athens Street, for about three hours.

No charges have been filed at this time.
