UPDATE: Banks Crossing businesses reopen after evacuation

UPDATED: State experts have determined a package placed at a Banks Crossing fast food restaurant Wednesday morning was not explosive.

That package, placed outside Wendy's on U.S. 441 at Faulkner Road, resulted in an evacuation of the eatery and other nearby businesses just after 11 a.m.

"The package in question has been determined as non-explosive," said Sgt. Carissa McFaddin of Banks County Sheriff's Office about 1:45 p.m. "GBI's specialized team did respond to the scene. They used their equipment to determine that the package did not contain any type of explosive, nor did the packaging."

The evacuation lasted for about two and one-half hours, with nearby businesses and an adjacent hotel being able to resume business about 1:45 p.m.

Law enforcement personnel are attempting to determine the reasoning for the placement of the package, as well as the identity of the person(s) responsible.

"We are investigating this," McFaddin said. "We do have witnesses that we are questioning at this time, as well as using the information they have given to look into any type of reason to why this package was placed where it was."

McFaddin said additional details cannot be released at this time.

"We will present further information once it is available, but this is an ongoing investigation," McFaddin said.
