Georgia to resume sales of license plates featuring Confederate flag

By Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Georgia will resume selling specialty license plates featuring a Confederate battle flag after halting sales earlier this summer.

Local news media report that the Department of Revenue and the Georgia chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans said this week they reached an agreement on a redesign. The new commemorative license plate removes the Confederate flag from the background of the tag, but leave a Conferate emblem in place in the foreground of the design.

State officials say the new plate could be available as early as next week.

The state stopped issuing license plates featuring two Confederate battle flags in late June. The decision came after a 21-year-old man had been accused of killing nine black members of a South Carolina church.

The shooter had been linked to an online diatribe professing allegiance to white supremacy and displaying the Confederate battle flag. Officials called for the removal of the flag and Confederate symbol from government buildings.
