Softball: Buford beats Columbus to notch 400th career win

LAWRENCEVILLE — The Buford girls softball team used a five-run second inning en route to a 10-5 win over Columbus Saturday in the Brookwood Invitational Tournament at Archer High School.

The Lady Wolves (16-6, 5-1 Region 8-AAAA) rebounded from a pair of tough one-run losses on Friday playing long ball. Buford smacked three home runs, which accounted for six of the 10 runs.

Junior Samantha Thomas got the home run derby going in the big second inning with a three-run blast. Senior Kennedy Kotula followed Thomas with a solo home run, and then added a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Senior Peyton Wolfe earned her 10th win of the season going five innings allowing seven while fanning three.

Senior Baylee Sexton had four hits, stole two bases, and scored twice for Buford. Freshman Katie Perkins had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for the Lady Wolves.

Buford next will play host to West Forsyth on Monday in a non-region contest.

NOTES: Buford’s victory over Columbus on Saturday was the program’s 400th victory.  The Lady Wolves overall record for now stands at 400-98-2. They have won eight straight state titles spanning three classifications.
