Guilty plea leads to 40-year sentence in West Ave. shooting

GAINESVILLE - Hall County's District Attorney confirmed one of two dependents in a 2014 West Avenue shooting case pleaded guilty to several charges last week.

D.A. Lee Darragh confirmed that Rodnie Maurice Stokes, 28, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Wednesday and received a 40-year sentence, 20 to serve in prison.

The plea stems from the June 5, 2014, incident that authorities said was drug-related.  The victim, Cedric Huff, 41, died of his wounds 17 days after being shot.

Stokes was initially charged with murder in an indictment that alleged he and 42 year old Leshan Tremiele Tanner of Gainesville went to Huff's home with the intent to buy a half pound of marijuana.

Darragh confirmed Stokes also pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery, attempted purchase of marijuana, possession of a gun by a convicted felon and possession of a gun during the commission of a crime.

Tanner was indicted on several counts, including murder, armed robbery and the attempted purchase of marijuana.  He went on trial Monday, according to Hall County court officials.
