Water levels in upper Savannah basin fall to drought levels, Lanier doing okay

By Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Water levels in the upper Savannah River basin have slipped into drought levels.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that above-average rainfall in August gave a boost to three reservoir lakes in the region. But it was not enough to make up for past shortfalls.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Thurmond Lake received 6.5 inches of rainfall in August. Lakes Russell and Hartwell in northest Georgia received 6 inches and 5.3 inches.

All three lakes entered drought level on Aug. 30 when the pool elevation at Thurmond Lake dipped to 325 feet above sea level. Officials plan to limit water discharges from the Thurmond Dam.

Lake Lanier has fared well over the summer. On Thursday morning, the level of Lanier was 1067.18; full pool is 1071.
