Georgia Southern issues body cameras to campus officers

By Associated Press

STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) Campus police officers at Georgia Southern University are now wearing body cameras during patrols.

The public university in Statesboro said Wednesday its 34 campus patrol officers are wearing the cameras in the field after a couple of weeks of training. Georgia Southern police have also installed video recording systems in four marked patrol cars.

Georgia Southern's interim campus police chief, Laura McCullough, said the equipment will help the department ``continue to be as open and transparent as possible'' regarding the conduct of its officers.

Officials say video of incidents captured by officers' body cameras will be downloaded at the end of every shift and kept for 90 days. The video will then be deleted unless it has been requested as evidence in a case.
