Commission on Medical Cannabis working toward end of year report

ATLANTA - Members of the state Commission on Medical Cannabis, including a Hall County woman, have three more meetings on their schedule before issuing a report to the governor.

The group held its second meeting this week, hearing from manufacturers of medical cannabis from other states.

Doctor Mandy Reece of Hall County, an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine's Suwanee Campus, is on the panel.

"We're going to look from a law enforcement perspective as well as from a physician perspective and those types of things," Reece said on topics for the upcoming meetings.

The panel was assembled after Georgia lawmakers approved a bill to decriminalize possession of medical cannabis oil for some patients in the state.

Nearly 200 patients have now qualified for Georgia's new medical cannabis oil registry as the panel examines issues for Georgia patients, including questions of how it works, how to dose it and how to buy or obtain it.

Reece said the good thing about the panel is its diversity.

"We have law enforcement, legislators, healthcare professionals like myself.  There's pharmacy and medicine, and we have researchers.  One's with Emory and one's with Georgia Regents University."

Reece said the commission should issue its report to the governor's office by the end of the year.  The 2016 Georgia legislative session begins in January.
