The season got started with a bang for some area high school football teams – while others will be going back to the drawing board after a mix of results for northeast Georgia-based programs.
Flowery Branch steamed out of halftime to run away with a 34-10 win over Chestatee -- scoring all 34 points in the second half after trailing the War Eagles 3-0 at halftime.
West Hall, meanwhile, made the most of four Johnson fumbles in the second quarter to spark a 35-9 win over the Knights in the “Battle of Oakwood.”
Gainesville will hope to take the lessons of its opener to heart after falling 34-0 to Grayson. The Rams defeated the Red Elephants 39-0 in 2014 before Gainesville went on to the Class AAAAA quarterfinals – and Gainesville will hope to duplicate that sort of bounce back.
Elsewhere, Commerce slammed Banks County for a 55-13 season-opening win that saw the Tigers rush for 447 yards. Rabun County also overtook Habersham Central 42-14 after a close first half, as the Wildcats moved to 1-1 on the season.
Buford dominated a hapless Berkmar program 77-0, rolling up just 230 yards in the process.
East Jackson also bounced back from a season-opening loss last week to hand Lakeview a 21-16 defeat in its opener, while Jackson County fought back from an early deficit to mash Madison County 48-23. It was a clean sweep for Jackson-based schools, in fact, as Jefferson also used another huge night from running back Colby Wood to defeat Winder-Barrow 32-17 to make the Dragons 2-0 on the season.
Mill Creek also moved to 2-0 on the season, hammering West Forsyth 51-13, while North Gwinnett pipped North Cobb at the finish line, 29-28.
Stephens County also got going on the right foot, knocking off Franklin County 34-7 in its season opener, while Union County stomped Towns County 35-7.
Meanwhile, North Forsyth, Riverside Military, Dawson County, Fannin County, White County, East Hall and Apalachee all suffered defeats on Friday.
