Brooks announces candidacy for Ward 3 Gainesville race

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's Ward three city council post has its second declared candidate for the upcoming election.

Barbara Brooks confirmed her intent to run in an email to accessWDUN Monday morning.

Brooks graduated from the University of Georgia with her Master of Social Work degree. She retired from the Gainesville City Schools in June as a school social worker.

Brooks, who describes herself as a hard worker, has lived in Gainesville for 47 years.  Brooks said she had intended to re-open her private counseling practice, then plans changed when current councilwoman Myrtle Figueras announced she would not seek re-election.

"Mrs. Brooks believes she can relate to anybody because she has worked with all kinds of people and shared the experiences of many of them; she values each person on that person's own merit and she loves people," a biography from her campaign reads.

Brooks said she's active at St. Paul United Methodist Church-Summit Street and the Gainesville-Hall County Black History Society.

Brooks joins another political newcomer in the race.  Business manager Lemuel Betancourt has also announced his intent to run.

The election is November third.
