Residents oppose multi-million dollar Suwanee development

By B.J. Williams

SUWANEE — City officials are excited about a new residential and retail development planned in Suwanee, but a number of citizens are not on board with the project.

The Suwanee Downtown Development Authority and a private developer announced last week a plan for a multi-million dollar project for the Town Center area. The $46 million five-story development would include street-level retail shops and 235 high-end apartments on Chicago Street at Buford Highway.

A group opposed to the project has launched a Facebook page under the name Save Suwanee Town Center, Our Home. Most posts on the site claim the development will mar Suwanee's small-town atmosphere.

Organizers are encouraging residents to speak out against the plan at this Tuesday's city council meeting. The rezoning for the project is scheduled to be reviewed as a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. at Suwanee City Hall.
