Church building plan gets final okay; Brenau gets a place to call 'home'

GAINESVILLE – Final approval was given Tuesday evening by the Gainesville City Council to a pair of zoning requests made on behalf of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta as part of their plan to construct a 1000-plus seat church in the city.

The unanimous decision affects two adjacent properties totaling 19.132 acres on S. Smith Road, near its intersection with Cherry Hill Drive on Gainesville’s west side, site of a former golf driving range.

According to officials with the Archdiocese, purchase of the property and construction work will begin as soon as possible

Council woman Myrtle Figueras wanted to emphasize that the church being built on the site is not intended to replace the city’s current Catholic Church.

Saying she has received telephone calls asking her about the new building, Figueras said, “This does not mean that St. Michael’s is moving anywhere.  This is simply for a new Catholic Church to be located in that zone.”

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

Brenau University started a women’s golf program last year, and now they can say they officially have a home course to call their own.

In a unanimous vote the Gainesville City Council approved an agreement with the school designating Chattahoochee Golf Course as the team’s home course for both matches and practice.

Interim City Manager Melody Marlowe wrote in her request that the University's new program “needs the support of the local community to be successful.”

According to city officials, the four-year agreement will not interfere with the golf course’s regular customer base, and the golf team will pay the city for their use of the facility.
