Plane occupants walk away from Gilmer County crash

ELLIJAY - Calling them very fortunate, Gilmer County Fire Chief Tony Pritchett said two men involved a single-engine plane accident at Gilmer County Airport Tuesday night walked away from the crash.

Pritchett said it happened in the 10:00 p.m. hour at the airport off Sunlight Road.

"The plane did go off the runway and nosed into the safety area to the left and was on its top."

Pritchett said the two had apparently attended an event at the airport and were headed back to Dalton when the accident happened.

"They refused care by emergency medical.  They were very very fortunate that they came out of the plane as unscathed as they did," Pritchett said.

While there was no fire involved in the incident, Pritchett said there was a fuel leak.

"We did put a blanket of foam down just as a precaution."

Gilmer County authorities notified the Federal Aviation Administration.  Pritchett said the federal agency was expected to send representatives Wednesday to investigate.
