Contract awarded for bridge repair on Hwy 53 West in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded the contract to repair the Highway 53 West Bridge near Gainesville Marina in Hall County.

GGH Contracting of Marietta was awarded the $2,942,722 contract with a completion date of June 30, 2016, according to Georgia DOT.

The project on the westbound bridge will remove and replace damaged pavement.  DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope said the epoxy-coated driving surface, installed in the early 1990's, is beyond its life.

"It was supposed to last about 15 years.  We are going on 25 years of this epoxy-coated surface.  It is really crumbling," Pope said.

The work also will extend under the road deck.

"We're going to repaint the truss system, as well as replace some bearings and some really wide cracking that has developed in the truss system," Pope added.

DOT officials are working on a timeline for the project.

"We do not have a start date yet. As construction work nears and timing is finalized, Georgia DOT will share construction plans with you," Georgia DOT District Engineer for Hall County Brent Cook said in a press statement.

When work begins on the bridge, built in 1956, lane closures will happen on weekends from 8:00 p.m. Fridays around the clock to 5:00 a.m. Mondays for a maximum of ten weekends.
