Spending weekends on the couch and weekdays on the water

A local fishing legend claims that the songwriter who penned the words to the Grammy Award winning song “What a Diff’rence A Day Makes” was also a fisherman; a fisherman who spent weekends on Lake Lanier during the summer and wanted to write a fishing song, but somehow ended up with a romantic ballad.

Fishing legends, being what they are, allow us to discount the credibility of that claim at least 90-percent.

Nonetheless, the difference between plying the waters of Lanier on Tuesday or Wednesday in July, and Saturday or Sunday in July, is staggering.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I didn’t encounter another vessel until roughly 11 A.M.

On Saturday, once the sun ascended above the tree line, I never stopped clinging to the pedestal seat in the front of my boat as I rode-out massive boat wake after massive boat wake.  Many of the passing pleasure boats affording me this thrill ride are better-suited for use in third-world naval armadas.

So my first recommendation for summer fishing on the “Big-Syd” (Lake Sydney Lanier):  be on the water on week days, be on the sofa watching TV fishing shows over the week end.

My four-decades of fishing our wonderful impoundment have convinced me of that truth.  And yes, there were as many boats on the water back in the 1970’s and 1980’s…gasoline prices were under a buck and everybody boated.

Check back here in a couple of days – once the weekend is history – and I’ll tell you how and where we caught our fish.  Yes, we did catch a few, and, the best part, never once came close to being flung overboard by a passing retired battleship!
