My first bite

“I think I got bumped,” is an expression bass fisherman use when something responds to their presentation but decides not to take the bait.  This blog had only been online a few days when I think I got bumped.

Someone whom I know well read my brilliant exposition from last week, responded, but wouldn’t take my offering with the complete abandon I expect from my readers.

Feigning indifference to his criticism I tried to listen politely… because he knows a thing or two about fishing; with arms crossed tightly I said, “Tell me more.”  Fisherman need to be good at lying.

“You really expect to get people to think they can catch fish during the middle of the day this time of year?” he asked with a measure of incredulity that I had not anticipated.

“You can catch fireflies during the day,” he said with an air of authority, “but just wait ‘til sundown and the process gets a whole lot easier,”.  (After all, he did work for an exterminating company for nearly a week and should know about bugs and beetles…or so he thinks.)

Ego-buster Jones (not his real name) has a point: when the sun is low (dawn and dusk) catching fish does seem to get easier.  “Well, I’ve never been one for doing things the easy way,” I replied with horrid rebuttal technique.

Ego-buster Jones agreed far too quickly.

Determined to answer this calling-out, I plan to spend at least three days this week assuaging my ego, waiting for full daylight to begin my quest.  So there!   (Oh Lord, please let me catch a fish this week.)
