VIDEO: Hall Co. Fire Marshal offers fireworks safety tips

GAINESVILLE—Wednesday marked the first day that citizens could purchase consumer, "aerial" fireworks in Georgia, and Hall County Fire officials are warning residents of the potential hazards.

"Use as directed. Don't get a lot of fireworks and tape them together, or make your own," said Scott Cagle, Hall County Fire Marshal.

"Common sense should always prevail."

First and foremost, Cagle said, is finding an open, flat area (preferably concrete) to shoot them, making sure there aren't any buildings or cars nearby that could pose a fire hazard. Then make sure you have a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water handy.

"Be careful in subdivisions. A lot of people have already called asking how far away from houses (they need to be), or if they can shoot them around houses," said Cagle.

He said as far as subdivisions go, finding a cul-de-sac would be ideal.

"One of the main things is: if you're uncomfortable or you're unsure of it, then don't. Have a 'designated shooter' who's in charge of shooting the fireworks," said Cagle.

Just make sure that shooter isn't drinking, if there's alcohol at the Independence Day party.

"We always say that drinking alcohol and shooting fireworks don't mix," said Cagle.

Even when the "aerial" fireworks had to be purchased in Alabama or South Carolina and brought back across state lines, Cagle said they still had to deal with injuries.

"There was a dud. It did not go off, and they approached it too quickly. They leaned over the firework, and then it went off in their face," said Cagle.

When you're done, Cagle says it's a good idea to let your fireworks soak in a bucket of water overnight. Again, he's speaking from experience. Cagle said they've had people throw their used fireworks in the garbage can, only to wake up and find their garage on fire later in the night.

"We want folks to enjoy the Fourth of July, and ask that if they buy consumer fireworks, just be careful," said Cagle.
