VIDALIA — The sheriff of Montgomery County was killed Monday night while involved in the chase of a suspect. Sheriff Ladson O'Connor's vehicle hit a culvert and overturned in neighboring Toombs County, according to WTOC-TV. The sheriff apparently was crushed underneath his vehicle.

The TV station reported that O'Connor joined the chase around midnight as back-up on Georgia Highway 56 near the Montgomery-Toombs County line.

The suspects in the case were identified as 35-year-old Jim Edward Lowery and 36-year-old Dixie Best. Both have been arrested. There is no word at this time on why the two were fleeing from deputies.

The TV station said Sheriff O'Connor is survived by his wife and four children.
