BRASELTON -- Spencer Ralston took an impressive step toward a golfing dream on Monday, finishing atop the standings in a local qualifier for the U.S. Open Golf Championship.

The Gainesville High junior fired a low round of 67 at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan to clinch a spot in a Sectional qualifier -- where another stellar outing would book a spot in the U.S. Open.

Ralston will compete over 36 holes in the Sectional on June 8 at Hawks Ridge in Canton. The number of slots available in each state's Sectional is unclear, though typically the top two-three golfers in each Sectional qualify for the Open.

The 2015 U.S. Open will take place at Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Wash.

Meanwhile, Ralston will help Gainesville compete for a Class AAAAA championship on May 18 at the Country Club of Columbus.
