UNG to break ground on new residence hall in Dahlonega

DAHLONEGA - The University of North Georgia (UNG) is embarking on building project that will create room for 536 more students to live on campus in Dahlonega.

School officials and Corvias Housing plan to break ground on the new four-story building on Tuesday afternoon.  The additional student housing will go at West Main Street and Walker Drive, across the street from the UNG Dining Hall.

The goal with the project, according to university officials, is to address a housing shortage on the Dahlonega campus.  Currently, students not in the Corps of Cadets must participate in a lottery for a housing slot.  Enrollment in Dahlonega has increased from just 3800 students to over 6600 students in a 13-year period.

"The showstopper will be a rooftop programming space with amazing mountain views.  More important to the students, the buildings are designed to foster community and will include creative meeting and study spaces. I am excited about the opportunities to enhance our residential campus experience this new residence hall provides," Dr. Janet Marling, vice president for student affairs at UNG, said.

The project in Dahlonega is part of the University System of Georgia's plan for Corvias Campus Living to develop over 3600 new beds by fall 2016 at schools in the system.

"Given UNG’s ties to the military and our own company background, this project is near and dear to our hearts and one that we’re very excited to get started on," Kurt Ehlers, managing director of Corvias Campus Living, said.

According to its website, Corvias has a history of public private partnerships for the military.

Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. near the intersection of West Main Street and Sunset Drive.
