Teen drowns in lake at Stone Mountain Park

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) A Tennessee teenager has drowned in a Georgia lake after family says he saved a friend who became distressed.

WSB-TV reports 17-year-old Nirmal Rai drowned Sunday in a lake at Stone Mountain Park east of Atlanta. Family members say Rai and his friends tried to swim from one island to another when one of the friends got into trouble. Rai jumped in and was able to save his friend, but went under during the rescue.

Rai, who is originally from Nepal but lived in Nashville, was visiting Nepali friends in Atlanta. Authorities say his body was recovered Monday.

Stone Mountain Park does not allow swimming in the lake because of the danger.
