Hall Co. high school students present year-long internship projects

By Hannah McQueen, Flowery Branch High School

OAKWOOD - Hall County high school students enrolled in the Honors Mentorship Program presented year-long projects about internships throughout the community on Thursday night.

The Honors Mentorship Program is a competitive application-only program for Hall County Schools that allows selected students to intern with organizations in their career field of choice to gain experience in the working world.

Students lined up with their laptops and tablets to display their websites that contained their final research projects. Members of the community, parents, Hall County educators and mentors to the students all showed up at the Lanier Charter Career Academy from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. to view the student presentations.

“I have learned so much from my time with this program," said Hunter McGhee, a senior at Flowery Branch High School.  "The experience I’ve gained has truly been priceless and the program has taught me extensive knowledge about the business world. The best part of the program is presentation night where all the HMP students give a presentation of what they have learned throughout their internships, and it is always so interesting to see.”

McGee completed his second year as an HMP student.

This year, over 40 students from various high schools participated in the program, and each student worked on a research project all year regarding their respective internships to learn valuable experience in their career field.

Student internships included stints with journalists at Access WDUN and The Times, doctors, nurses and optometrists at various local clinics and hospitals like Guilford Immediate Care, graphic designers, photographers, teachers at local middle and elementary schools, workers in the fashion industry and more.
