Hall Co. Commission considers road repairs, hears update on tennis court repairs

GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Commission is considering $4,908,252 in county road repairs on 24.89 miles of roadway, to be sponsored by SPLOST VII.

That mileage is spread across 64 various projects across Hall County, with none of them longer than 2.7 miles long; the biggest chunk of work will be done in Commission District 3 (36%).

"We always try to even (the work) out between the districts because we keep all the District Commissioners happy and the residents in those districts happy," said Ken Rearden, Public Works Director.

The five most expensive items on the list ar as follows:

  1. $437,818 for work on Mountain View Road from Memorial Park Place to McEver Road (2.77 miles)
  2. $389,944 for work on Latty Road from Old Cornelia Highway to Sate Route 52 (2.47 miles)
  3. $371,932 for work on Belton Bridge Road from Highway 365 to Pea Ridge Road (2.35 miles)
  4. $241,582 for work on Lakeland Road from Cleveland Highway to Clarks Bridge Road (1.53 miles)
  5. $183,912 for work on Lebanon Church Road from Gillsville Highway to Holly Springs Road (1.16 miles)

Even though it wasn't among the most expensive, Rearden said repair work along Spout Springs Road wsa among the most important items on the list.

"It's just patching of some major areas...We're trying to maintain that road until we get to resurfacing or widening that road," said Rearden.

The Commission will vote on the matter Thursday night, but Rearden said work should be underway fairly soon.

"We will probably put the job out for bid sometime in late May, and we will probably be finished in November," said Rearden.

COUNTY HEARS UPDATE ON TENNIS COURT REPAIRS

The commisioners also got to hear the update on a months-long process of repairing a tennis court in a Hoschton neighborhood.

The Village at Deaton Creek came to the commssion in October 2014, requesting $20,000 to repair their court, which was damaged by a county water line that was installed beneath it.

After taking a closer look at the problem, the commission determined that they needed to completely tear out the court, which is one of eight in the neighborhood, and install a new one in its place, at a budget of $55,000.

25 companies were mailed solicitations to bid on the work, but only one, Talbot Tennis in Marietta, returned a bid.

Talbot said they could do the work for $61,216, which is more than $6,000 over budget.

John Mercer spoke on behalf of residents in the neighborhood: "We are aware of Talbot Tennis, and we do believe their qualifications are acceptable."

The company has done repair work at Perimeter College, Coastal College of Georgia, and Americus High School, among others.

Commissioners will consider the over-budget bid Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.
