Huntingdon sweeps DH from Piedmont softball

DEMOREST -- In a pair of close contests, the Lady Lions fell just short as the Huntingdon Hawks took both games of the doubleheader Saturday with a 5-3 victory in game one and a 4-2 win in the second game. The twinbill marked the final two home contests of the 2015 season for Piedmont College as they finished the season 8-6 at Walker Athletic Complex.

Four seniors were honored between games one and two as WHITNEY WOLFE, MARYROSE BURNS, MADISON EUBANKS andABBY ATKINSON were each recognized for their achievements throughout their careers in the Green and Gold.

Game 1: Huntingdon 5, Piedmont 3

A 3-run homer for the visiting squad proved to be the difference in game one as the Hawks took the victory 5-3 over the Lady Lions.SARAH WALKER took the loss moving her record to 9-6 this season pitching the complete game, giving up nine hits and seven strikeouts.

The Hawks were the first on the board plating two runs in the top of the first taking a 2-0 lead. Huntingdon scored the pair of runs on two hits and two errors.

Piedmont answered back with a pair of runs in the third inning to tie the game at two all. LAURA CARTER scored the first run of the game on an ABBY SMITH double to left center field, and Smith later came around to score on a JESSICA BAGWELL single to left field.

A three-run blast separated the Hawks from the Lions as they took a 5-2 lead on the homerun in the 5th inning and the Lions put up a single run in the sixth to cut it to 5-3. LAUREN BEARDEN singled to left field scoring BECKA ROSS, but the Lions were unable to mount a comeback.

The Lions had seven hits in the game with the first six hitters in the lineup all recording a single hit. Bagwell went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Game 2: Huntingdon 4, Piedmont 2

Despite getting on the board first in the second contest, the Hawks walked away with the sweep of the doubleheader winning 4-2 against the Lady Lions. ABBY SMITH led the team with a 2-for-2 outing, an RBI and two walks.

Smith helped the Lady Lions to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with the first of her two hits, a single through the left side, scoringABBY ATKINSON. That was the only run the Lady Lions would manage to plate until the sixth inning.

In the top of the second, the Hawks answered back and took the lead for good with a pair of runs, both unearned. Huntingdon would add another two runs in the fourth inning to finish the Hawks scoring for the day.

Piedmont would add another run in the sixth but it was not enough as MADISON EUBANKS earned a walk with the bases loaded sending BECKA ROSS in to score making it a 4-2 game.

AVERY MIGUES took the loss in the game moving to 0-2 this season pitching 3.2 innings giving way to SARAH WALKER who took over in relief. ALLYSON GENTRY was 2-for-4 at the plate behind Smith's 2-for-2 game.

The Lady Lions will now end the season on the road as they return to action against Covenant College on the road at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
