GAFFNEY, S.C. - Three time Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series Champion Randy Weaver is on a hot run right now, as the Crossville, TN driver led all 60 laps Sunday afternoon at the Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C. to score the March Madness victory.
It was not easy, as he had to hold off a late race charge that was made by Blairsville, Ga.’s Jonathan Davenport. Weaver did what he had to do as Davenport tried several times on the inside and outside but just could not keep Weaver from getting his 28th career win with the series.
The action was broken up for a pair of scary looking crashes. The first occurred on lap four, when Brent Dixon lost control in turn three and made contact with the wall. The contact sent his racer for a wild ride, as his car flipped over. Dixon climbed out uninjured.
The race was stopped for over 30 minutes on the 16th lap when Chris Ferguson and Dennis Franklin made contact coming down the front stretch. That triggered a major pile up in turn one, with the car of Dustin Mitchell upside down and Dillon Tidmore on top of the pile. Other drivers involved included Todd Morrow, Chris Madden and Ross Bailes. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Toccoa, Ga.’s Casey Roberts finished in third, with hometown driver Dennis Franklin in fourth and Jason Hiett in fifth.
Jimmy Rasey, Riley Hickman, Anthony Sanders, Kelly Guy and Doug Sanders rounded out the top ten.
