Gainesville residents: Time running out on storm debris removal

GAINESVILLE - Time is running out to get in on the storm debris removal deal offered by the City of Gainesville.

Residents are reminded that only two weeks remain to place storm debris at the curb to fall under the modified ordinance on curbside limbs and cuttings. The following three sections of the ordinance were modified in February following the ice storm.

1. Remove the volume limitation on curbside limbs and cuttings. (Debris must be five feet or less in length and weigh less than 50 pounds)

2. Remove the special fee on excessive volume. (This applies to vegetative debris only)

3. Remove the restriction on accepting debris from commercial tree trimming operations. (However, if a homeowner hires someone to cut up the debris we encourage them to have the company remove the debris to help expedite the clean-up process throughout the city)

Residents are reminded that storm debris should be placed behind the curb and it should be obvious it is debris. Debris should not be placed on fire hydrants or other yard plantings.

These modifications will remain in place until March 31. After March 31, the regular fee will apply.

In addition, limbs and cuttings must not be mixed with other debris such as roofing tiles, fence materials, or other items damaged during the storm. This modification only applies to limbs and cuttings.

The debris picked up by the city is turned into mulch and leaf compost which is available to the public free of charge at the City Shop on Alta Vista Road.
