Braselton officials approve funeral home, cemetery plan

BRASELTON - After a vote of approval Monday night by city council members, construction will get underway soon on a new funeral home and cemetery near downtown Braselton.

Jack Frost, who owns three funeral homes in Hall County, will develop Memorial Park East-Braselton on Jesse Cronic Road at Broadway Avenue/Highway 124. Frost said he had been looking for a location for a new facility in the Braselton area for about two years.

"We had several locations under consideration and probably could have developed it, but we really, really wanted to wait to get the exact location that would be beneficial for all the people in that part of the [region]," said Frost.

Braselton City Manager Jennifer Dees confirmed the Monday night vote, saying via e-mail that council members voted unanimously to approve rezoning for the 16.29-acre parcel. Council members voted 3-1 for a variance request and a conditional use request for the project. Dees said Council Member Tony Funari recused himself.

Frost said he anticipated construction on the project could begin in as little as 60 to 90 days.

"I'll go to the architect...and he will draw the plans for the funeral home," said Frost. "I will design the cemetery and memorial park myself - that is what I consider my expertise."

He said the funeral home itself woould be about 12,000 square-feet in size.

Frost said one of the first parts of the project will be the development of a veterans' section for the cemetery.

"[I'll do that] so that those families who have been in that area that have had to go to Cherokee County - 60 or 70 miles away to bury a veteran - I'm going to make it available to them so they can bury them at Memorial Park East," said Frost.

Frost acknowledged there had been some opposition to the project, and he said he understood those concerns, but he declined to discuss the opposition further.
