Ga. House backs legalizing fireworks to spark economy

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) The Georgia House hopes that legalizing fireworks will spark part of the state's economy.

A bill allowing the sale of `consumer fireworks' passed the chamber on Monday, 119 votes to 49.

Sponsoring Rep. Jay Roberts says all states surrounding Georgia except North Carolina allow fireworks sales. The Ocilla Republican says Georgia residents regularly travel across state borders to buy the items.

The House bill requires fireworks companies or nonprofits using the sales as a fundraiser to be licensed by the state.

Sales would be limited to people 18 years or older and prevent online transactions.

Several lawmakers expressed concern about injuries to children as a result of legalizing fireworks.

The proposal now goes to the Senate for consideration.
