Flowery Branch hopes to have sewer line leak repaired over the weekend

By B.J. Williams
FLOWERY BRANCH - While the city manager of Flowery Branch says there's no immediate health threat to anyone because of a sewer line that's been leaking into Mud Creek, that line has to be fixed right away.

Bill Andrew told council members at the council's regular meeting Thursday night that city staff tested the water in the creek just last month and found no problem. The Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper alerted them Tuesday to elevated fecal coliform levels they discovered during testing.

"We test several creeks and the lake and several other bodies of water throughout the area that we serve, so it just so happens that the Riverkeeper tested after we did and found the leak," said Andrew.

He told council members that once the city staff learned about the leak Tuesday morning, they had neutralized the site by Tuesday afternoon.

In a presentation to Council, Andrew said city staff had tested Mud Creek last month and found no problems. The damaged line was discovered near Radford Road.

He estimated about 7,200 gallons of wastewater was having to be diverted each day because of the leak.

Council approved spending up to $49,000 to make the repair to the damaged line.

Andrew had already contacted contractors for bids, and he said the work on the line would begin immediately; he estimated the repairs would be complete by the first of the week.
