CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Fire destroyed the control tower and concession stand late Sunday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. just days before the 25th Annual Ice Bowl on January 7-10.
Despite the main structure of the facility being burned to the ground, an initial statement by track officials is that the Ice Bowl will go on as scheduled.
Track officials said the Fire Marshal has been at the track since after day break on Monday to investigate the fire, which reports indicate was contained to the control tower/concession stand building at the start/finish line of the 1/3-mile clay oval.
Once the Fire Marshal’s personnel have completed their investigation, the rebuilding efforts will begin with heavy equipment currently standing by to begin the cleanup. Individuals include racing competitors and fans with construction abilities have already pledged to volunteer to do whatever is necessary to make the speedway functional for the upcoming Icebowl event.
NeSmith Racing will be officiating the 25th Annual Icebowl, which will feature Super Late Models, the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division, Limited Late Models/Sportsman, Thunder Cars and Hot Shots. The Icebowl has become one of premier events in dirt track racing, and traditionally opens the racing season each year.
