RMA wins national JROTC championship

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - The Riverside Military Academy Raider teams recently traveled to Molena, Ga., for the 2015 National Raider (JROTC) Championships and came home with the championship trophy.

Riverside’s A and B teams trained trained every day for three months for the compeition, and the preparation paid off as they each became Raider National Champions in their divisions.

The events involved rope bridges, cross-country rescue, gauntlets, and a 5K, among other things.

“Without question, 1SG Williams leads one of the finest Raider Junior ROTC programs in the nation. Some may say they have an advantage coming from a military school but the reason they win has nothing to do with facilities or finances – it has to do with a total commitment to excellence, great leadership, hard work and sacrifice the cadets make to be great. The rigors of attending such a demanding academic facility are great, but the team still makes time to work together and grow to one of the best teams in the country,” stated Justin Gates, Competition Director of Sports Network International.

The teams’ head coach is 1st Sergeant Andy Williams, and the assistant coaches are Sgt. Major Jorge Sosa and Lieutenant Col. Kenny Payne.
