Ty Majeski scores Governor’s Cup win at New Smyrna

Ty Majeski made the long drive from Seymour, Wis. to New Smyrna Beach, Fla. pay off in a big way on Sunday.

Majeski moved to the lead of the 50th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway just after the halfway point and went on to score win on the fast half-mile raceway.

Majeski joins a long list of Hall of Fame drivers such as Freddy Fryar, Dick Trickle and Gary Balough to win the prestigious asphalt Late Model race.

Cole Anderson brought the field to green, with Jeff Scofield alongside, followed by Steven Nasse and Senoia, Ga.’s Bubba Pollard. Anderson would jump out to the early lead, but would be challenged one lap later by Nasse, who took the top spot on lap three.

The fight for the lead would be broken up by the first caution of the day on lap five, when several cars tangled in turns three and four.

Back under green, Nasse retook the top spot. Moments later, a massive pile up on the backstretch left the track blocked, leading officials to red flag the race to allow for clean up.

Once the race got back underway, Pollard began challenging Nasse for the lead, and would come away with the point, while Steven Wallace moved to third.

While Pollard clicked off laps, Wallace, Nasse and Anderson put on a spirited back-and-forth battle for the runner up spot.

Pollard would hold the lead until lap 59, when Wallace moved around to take the lead down the backstretch. Meanwhile, Majeski began to flex his muscles, as he moved around Nasse to take the third spot on lap 84.

Five laps later, Anderson spun on the backstretch, bringing out the caution. On the restart, Wallace would resume the lead with Pollard in second, while Nasse moved back around Majeski for third.

As the race reached the halfway point, Pollard began hounding Wallace for the top spot. After the two battled for several laps, Wallace firmly put his mount out front, while Majeski moved around Pollard for second. Two laps later, Majeski powered around Wallace and into the lead for the first time on the day.

A spin by two time raced winner Augie Grill, who had been running in the top five, on lap 120 set the field for the planned competition caution, giving crews five minutes on pit road to make adjustments.

On the restart, Majeski moved back to the lead while Wallace worked to hold off Pollard for second. The race was interrupted five laps later by a two car crash in the third turn. The caution would come out again on the restart, when Nasse slowed to a stop in turn two. He was able to refire his engine and continued on.

Majeski reasserted himself at the front of the field on the restart, and would stay there until the a caution came out with 40 laps to go, when race officials brought him to pit road to check for an oil leak. Officials gave him the all-clear, and he resumed the lead under caution.

Caution flew again five laps later, when another multi-car crash ended the day for several competitors, including Grill, Cody Coughlin and Dawsonville, Ga.'s Spencer Davis.

Back under green, Wallace continued to try to pressure Majeski for the lead, only to see his day end with a crash in turn two.

From there, Majeski moved away from the field and went on to score his first Governor’s Cup victory.

Jeff Scofield finished in second, with Derek Thorn third, Pollard in fourth and Tyler Ankrum in fifth.

Derek Kraus, Chad Pierce, Nasse, Dylan Bigley and D.J. Hoelzle rounded out the top ten.
