State softball: Thomas walk-off HR sends Buford into AAAA title series

By AccessWDUN staff

COLUMBUS — Samantha Thomas smacked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Buford into the championship series of the Class AAAA girls state softball tournament at the Olympic Softball Complex Friday.

Thomas's blast gave the Lady Wolves a 4-3 win over Heritage, Catoosa in the semifinals. It was the second one-run victory for Buford (29-6) in the double-elimination Elite 8 tournament and the Lady Wolves have taken all three games by two runs or less.

Buford next will take on the Hertiage, Catoosa-Walnut Grove winner at noon Saturday for the championship. A Buford win would be its ninth straight state title and second straight in Class AAAA. A loss in the noon game would sent it to a one-game winner-take-all contest at 2 p.m.

Kennedy Kotula got the win in relief for the Lady Wolves. Logan Caymol started for Buford but did not factor in the decision.
